Starting a business is exciting, and sometimes our motivation to be successful causes us to think irrationally. Remember to FOCUS your idea, your plan, and your products/services. How do you focus? Start with a niche. For example, if you are opening a restaurant, FOCUS on one type of dish and keep your menu short. If you are opening a retail store, FOCUS on one type of merchandise subcategory. If you are opening a service company, FOCUS on one service, your best service.
To think of it another way, if your product was on Amazon.com, how would it be categorized? Get to the last subcategory of your business and FOCUS on that. When you focus, you don't spread yourself thin, you open your resources so that you can change plans if needed, and you leave room to expand your product/service. After all, Apple started with one computer, McDonald's started with a humble hamburger, and Cabela's started with homemade fishing flies. Be successful, be sustainable!
